Green burial is a way to care for the dead with minimal environmental impact. Find out about the work of Green Burial Boson and what we are doing to create options for green burial in Massachusetts.

Natural burial is the interment of the body of a dead person in the soil in a manner that does not inhibit decomposition but allows the body to be naturally recycled. It is an alternative to other contemporary Western burial methods and funerary customs.

"Nothing helps a person come to terms with the death of a loved one, or even a family member one did not love, than helping to feed the Earth with the nutrient rich compost a human cadaver provides," Judy Lott asserted in a Skype interview.

"At the 'Natural Resting Grounds of the East Blue Hills Cemetery' we not only help bury the dead in a natural burlap bag, we encourage families to help dig the hole for the body themselves.  When a person is using a hand auger and boring down into the Earth one feels a connection to the planet, and to the dead who have finally reduced their carbon footprint."
 "We were a kind of 'unofficial' burial ground over the first few years and did have an unfortunate case where a woman's body was tunneled through with PVC pipe by a utility company laying lines for the electric system of the main office.  The family was very understanding and the pipe was removed from the head of the skeleton that was unearthed.  The up side was that the family got a free re-burial service and got to say goodbye to their great grandmother again."


Some families chose to have a simple granite stone as a memorial to the departed.  The Green Burial ground crew seeks to accommodate their wishes and works maintenance around the memorials.

Jack Rabbits Overrun Half Moon Island - Reach Mainland Gardens in Quincy and Boson

Jack rabbits overrun  After Animal Rights activists and volunteers helped bring wild Jackrabbits to Half Moon Island in Quincy Bay the animals began to proliferate.  Almost every island in Boston Harbor now has numbers of the hungry rabbits.  Nearby in Quincy and Boson the rabbits are eating there way through peoples gardens and even lawns.   . Close to 40 jack rabbits huddled against the cold Tuesday afternoon last week, looking like snow-covered hillocks rising from an open field across from North Quincy Shore Drive in Boson.
