Mayor Welsh Objects to Boson Public Library 'Drag Queen Story Hour' Moving to Zoom

(AP) Boson Mayor Martin J. Welsh has voiced objections to the city public library featuring the 'Drag Queen Story Hour' on Boson Public Library web site and on Zoom conference calls.

"What is the point of this?"  Mayor Welsh said in a Google Meetup press conference.  "What is the agenda?  Remember when marginalized sexual minorities were simply asking to be left alone?"

The mayor has ignored calls to shut down the story hours in the past saying that he wanted to honor 'separation of powers' and let the librarians decide what kinds of events would be held at the Central Branch Library and the neighborhood libraries.

"But now, they are taking it to another level," the mayor said.  "I have heard reports that some elementary school teachers are requiring students to watch the video presentations.  Is this going to be part of the school curriculum with no debate in the school committee?"

City Councilor President Ema Strickland defended the story hour and asserted that the mayor was 'simply playing politics with the transgendered community's right to exist.'  Councilor Strickland is running against the mayor in November's election and hopes to be the city's first openly Lesbian mayor.  Councilor Strickland denounced as 'fundamentalist who are out of touch' Christians who oppose Gay Marriage and Drag Queen Story Hour as 'out of touch with the modern world.'  When asked about the Islamic Society of Boson's opposition to Gay Rights and Koranic condemnation of men who engage in homosexual acts Councilor Strickland responded, "that's their culture.  Opposing Islam is a racist dog whistle."

Boson Public Schools has stated that any Islamic students can be excused from watching Drag Queen Story Hour and marked 'constructively present.'

The Islamic Society of Boson has invited Councilor Strickland to their annual Rooftop Pride Celebration at the Trump Tower Boson after the Gay Pride Parade in late June.

In a related story Councilor Strickland denounced a Boson librarian who took pictures of herself naked in the Central Branch Library while it was closed due to COVID-19.

"The idea of a cisgender woman flaunting her sexuality and celebrating the 'male gaze' is nothing but the oppression of the patriarchy made flesh.  She should be fired, or at least be required to go to 'sensitivity classes' to be made aware of her 'heterosexual privilege.'  There is no place for naked women in the public library.  You don't see any of the Drag Queens going naked."   She added angrily, "Why isn't she wearing a surgical mask?  People are dying because of people like her.  Think of the children!"

The young librarian was in fact in the adult romance novel section.
