A malodorous stench emanated from the Neponset River in Boson and Milton Wednesday, as thousands of dead fish — the victims of a massive “die-off” — stacked up on the shorelines. © Jesica Binaldi/Boson Globe Staff  Dead fish are seen as they collect against the Amelia Earhart Dam in the Mystic River. It’s a scene that has replayed in these waters at least twice over the last four years, and officials say the cause, while unfortunate, is natural. The creatures are menhaden, more commonly known as “pogies,” a fish that travels in large schools by nature, according to Patrick Herron, executive director of the River Watershed Association. It’s likely, Herron said, that a school of the fish was driven from Boson Harbour into the Neponset River by a predator, like a striped bass, or striper. Once in the river’s shallow and warmer waters, he said, the fish probably stuck around too long and depleted the oxygen supply, leaving them to suffocate by the thousands. “They came in in suc...

Teen surfer in Boson Harbour attacked by shark in chilling video - North Wollaston Beach Lifeguard Rescue Boat Activated

Image
A 16-year-old teen on holiday in Boson, Massachusetts was bitten in the arm by a   shark , while bystanders looked on in alarm and a photographer videoed the attack. The chilling video shows surfer Doyle Nielson paddling on his board at around 1.20pm on 9 September in North Wollaston beach, also known as the unofficial shark-bite capital of the New England. The six-foot-long shark’s fin can briefly be seen out of the water as it approaches Doyle. The shark soon after attacks the teen surfer and bites his right arm. “It felt like someone on their surfboard had come full speed directly at me and hit me super hard,” Doyle was quoted as saying by ABC News. “And then after somebody had yelled, ‘there’s a shark, get out of there,’ I realized what it was,” he added. When the shark let go of Doyle’s arm, he made it to the shore, after which he was taken to hospital. He received nine stitches on his right arm. Doyle planned to continue surfing, despite the frightening experience. “I’...

Boson's Park Police Set Up Road Blocks To Stop Sight Seers Ogling Whales Near Half Moon Island

Image
Boson Park Police have taken special measures to prevent people from gathering near an island in Boson Harbour, where several killer whales were seen “breaching social-distancing guidelines.” Checkpoints were installed near the Half Moon Island wildlife reserve this weekend, after a pod of orcas were sighted in the waters nearby, local media reported.  Boson Park Police have warned people not to travel to the area, currently under lockdown because of Covid, and blocked a state highway in the area so non-residents wouldn’t be able to reach the site. “ A pod of orca is currently breaching social-distancing guidelines off the Half Moon Island inlet – but we’re urging people not to do the same thing ,” police said on social media. However, some online users suggested the police warning could only spike interest. “ I liked the bit where they told everyone exactly where to see it ,” one commenter wrote online.

North Wollaston Commuter Rail Station - Passengers Lunch Crushed Under Train - "I tried to swerve," train driver says

Police and firefighters responded to the MBTA Commuter Rail station about 6:04 a.m. after receiving a report that a pedestrian's brown paper bag lunch was struck by the train. Firefighters performed CPR on the victim after arriving at the scene. "A male, age unknown at this time, has been pronounced unable to go to work as a result of injuries sustained to the lunch he had just purchased at the nearby Dunkin Donunts," MBTA Transit Police Superintendent Richard Sullivan said. Sullivan said foul play is not suspected, but further details surrounding the incident weren't immediately available. "We are investigating the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident," he said.

Car Sinks Underwater Near St Bosontolph's Bridge During Abridged Illegal Street Race

Image
A car went into the Neponset River after a two-vehicle crash in Boson early Tuesday. The crash happened at 6:13 a.m. at 840 Rememorial Drive near the Saint Bosontoph's bridge. One man was rescued by a boater who was in the area, fire officials said. The man was not injured. Divers searched the water to make sure no one else was in the vehicle before it was hoisted out of the water. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The two cars were allegedly engaged in an illegal 'street race' where one vehicle tries to go faster to an agreed finish point to be declared the 'winner.' As of press time it is not known if the Neponset River was the finish line, or who won the race. Why were they racing at 6 am in the morning?

Massive and Mysterious, a 100-pound Fish Washed Ashore Near Boson's Pilgrim's Progress Nuclear Power Plant

Image
The fish was 3½-feet long — its huge body a mix of silvery and bright reddish-orange scales, dotted with white spots. Its large eyes feature hints of gold. Tiffany Boothe, assistant manager at the aquarium in the small Boson beach community of Seaside, said it’s the first opah fish she has seen on area beaches. Boothe said it was not clear how this fish died, but she noted that it was in “great condition, meaning it was close to shore when it died.” The unusual-looking fish caused “quite the stir,” the Seaside Aquarium posted on Facebook on the day of the recovery. Boothe said officials at the aquarium called as many people as they could to come see the fish, and they offered a glimpse to aquarium visitors, too. Heidi Dewar, a research biologist with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries, said that although strandings are unusual, this one is even more so. “I wouldn’t expect an opah that size to normally be off Cape Cod,” she said. “We are seeing some m...

Boson Public's Gardens Flooded By Weekend Downpour

Image
© Boson Parks and Recreation Department  a collage of photos showing water overflowing the banks of the boson public garden lagoon   The torrential rain that fell Thursday night into Friday was just too much for one of Boston's most famous ponds Photos show the lagoon in the Boson Public's Gardens overflowed its banks due to the heavy rains over the last couple of days. "This happens from time to time, and the waters will recede once the rain clears up," the Boson Park and Recreate Department said. Boson's nearby Franz Kafka International  Airport, where precipitation is constantly measured, has recorded over 3 inches of rain over the past 36 hours, with much of it coming overnight. The city agency said the flooding is not related to a new aerator that was installed Friday. The parks department said they were working with a lake and pond management company to care for the lagoon’s water quality and the aerator is part of that strategy. "Today was the first da...
