Boson Fire Arms Sales Increase - Lines at Gun Store - Liberal Democrats Call For Suspension of Constitutional Right to Bear Arms 'During Crisis'

(AP) As the COVID-19 events unfold many people are not just thinking about making sure they have enough food and toilet paper - some are exercising their right to have weapons like guns.

Boson's biggest gun store has a line around the building as citizens and residents seek to purchase firearms.

Boson Police have issued a statement affirming what Republican Mayor Welsh has said about citizens right to purchase weapons for self defense.  "We support the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution and note that all local, state, and federal laws are followed at every gun retailer in the City of Boson.  We would urge people standing in line to follow President Trump and the CDC recommendation to keep three feet between yourself and the people in line."

The Liberal City Councilor President Democrat Ema Strickland was not happy with the lack of police response.  "Now is not the time for people to be thinking of guns and gun violence," a visibly angry Councilor Strickland said at an impromptu presser outside the City Council Chambers.  "I join others across the nation in calling for the US Constitution to be suspended during the COVID-19 events.   Other mayors have proposed the same thing.  If a person has a problem they should call the police.  You have a right to call the authorities; you should not have the right to use a gun."

One reporter pointed out that Massachusetts was the place were the American Revolution started and that British troops marched to Lexington Common to take guns away from the local population who had organized themselves into a militia called the Minutemen.

"That is ancient history," Councilor Strickland retorted.  "America is no longer at war with England, and there are no British troops or Hessian mercenaries going house to house to confiscate weapons.  As a matter of fact the UK is now ahead of the US as they have calls for 'knife control' since they don't allow British subjects to own guns."

"The Second Amendment is somewhat out of date, but the strangely worded amendment clearly is saying that a state can have a National Guard type organization that they called a 'militia.'  No one then pictured average poor people being allowed to walk into a store and by a gun.  No one thought black people were going to be allowed to buy a gun.  They were thinking of middle class farmers having a musket for hunting and occasional militia duty to back up the police or army."

The mayor's ally Peter Reese spoke up from the balcony behind Ema Strickland to contradict the councilor.  "The US Constitution was one of the first times in history that a government's ruling document seceded the monopoly on weapons to the people.   Most ruling classes forbid the lower classes being armed or able to fight back in any way.  The US Constitution pictured the average person as being the effective armed government as a group.  That was very much a break from the English governments legal monopoly on armed violence and the weapons needed to rule a society."

"The police are only minutes away in the City of Boson," Councilor Strickland interjected.

"When you are in trouble the authorities are minutes away," Reese countered, "when seconds count.  The police have a job of protecting the society as a whole, to ensure that the society functions, and laws are obeyed.  Your personal safety is first upon you as an individual."
