Boson City Hall Rally Demands 'Liberty' and End to Lockdown - 23 May 2020
(AP) Over 300 people demonstrated on Boson Commons next to City Hall calling for an end to the lockdown across Massachusetts.
Demonstrators came to the Boson City Hall on Saturday to march around the commons, feasting on barbecue and demanding that Gov. Charles Duane Baker Jr. lift his restrictions on business, religious gatherings and other trappings of everyday life.
The protest, dubbed Liberty Fest, was a cross between a tailgate party, music festival and political statement. Organizers said it would be Eastern Massachusetts largest Memorial Day weekend protest against coronavirus stay-at-home orders.
A crowd gathered along Trimount Street, facing the west steps of city hall, with hundreds arriving hours before the official noon start. Two busloads came from the Pleasant Valley neighborhood arrived to cheers from the throng.
.
While the crowd was peaceful, at least three demonstrators briefly hopped the temporary fence installed weeks ago along the sidewalk to keep protesters away from the west steps.
One man tried to give officers a copy of Tom Paine's treatise on liberty 'Common Sense.' The officer noted that the volume was from Boson Public Library and seemed to be overdue. The man quickly disappeared into the crowd and shouted "Down with tyrants" apparently directed at the hated library fine collection department autocrats.
While Boson Mayor Welsh is a conservative Republican and Trump supporter he has kept relatively quiet about lockdowns in Boson. "I will let Governor Baker handle the pandemic regulations," the mayor said via Skype. "Our health department will stay in touch with state officials and do what is necessary and legal."
City Council President Ema Strickland who is a Liberal Democrat denounced the protesters. "These people are racists who are using 'dog whistle' coded words to rally a vast Right Wing conspiracy against the marginalized communities of this city. When I see them waving American flags in front of Boson City hall I get sick to my stomach. They should all have been arrested. We sent most of the prisoners in Boson County Jail home to make room for quarantine deniers. Why didn't the police arrest these people? If I am elected mayor in November's election, we will enforce the law and no US flag wavers will be illegally assembling in front of Boson City Hall."
