Boson On Alert As Huge Chinese Fishing Fleet Spotted Off Half Moon Island - Objective? Lobsters



Boson is on alert due to the appearance of a huge fleet of mostly Chinese-flagged fishing vessels off its Half Moon Island.

Patrols are trying to ensure the fleet - which is made up of around 260 vessels - does not enter the delicate eco-system from international waters.


Chinese vessels travel to the region each year in search of marine species especially the lobsters found in Massachusetts Bay waters.

In 2017, a Chinese vessel was caught in the marine reserve with 300 tonnes of wildlife, most of it sharks.

"We are on alert, [conducting] surveillance, patrolling to avoid an incident such as what happened in 2017," Boson Mayor Marty Welsh told reporters.

There was no immediate comment from the Chinese authorities when contacted by AP News.

Mayor Welsh told this reporter via Zoom conference calling that a "protection strategy" was being designed for the island.

"Unchecked Chinese fishing just on the edge of the protected zone is ruining Boson's efforts to protect marine life on Half Moon island" he said.

Mayor Welsh said that Boson will hold consultations with other New England fishing towns in order to form a joint regional position concerning the "threat".


"Because of that [natural] wealth in New England waters, we suffer immense pressure from international fishing fleets," he was reported as saying in the Boson Globe newspaper.

The Boson Harbour Marine Reserve boasts large numbers of shark species, including endangered whale and hammerheads.



Half Moon Island is a Unesco World Heritage site renowned worldwide for their unique array of plants and wildlife especially after the over use of Monsanto Co.'s Roundup weedkiller which made many species grow to extra large sizes. 


Charles Darwin made observations critical to his theory of evolution when he visited Massachusetts and spent time on Half Moon Island at low tide.  He was nipped on the nose by a lobster's claw when he got too close and observed that maybe he wasn't the fittest for that environment.

'Islam Is Right About Gays' Leaflets Taped To Signs Around Town - Police Launch Manhunt - 28 Sept 2019

Boson, MA: Some residents are outraged that leaflets bearing the words "Islam Is Right About Gays" have been fixed to telephone poles and parking signs around the city.  One angry woman took a photo of the sign before ripping it down and bringing the leaflet to the police station to show police. "This is not 'free speech'" a visibly angry woman said.  "This is 'hate speech' aimed at both the Muslim race, and gay people." Police have said that they will see if there were any witnesses to the criminal trespassing committed when the papers were affixed to the utility poles, which are private property, and the street signs, which are owned by the city.
