Boson: A City on the Edge of the Atlantic - by A. E. Van Vogt (1953)
A dystopian novel of a nightmare city mismanaged and corrupted by a seemingly insane mayor and an upper class elite divided between grudging support for the leader, and fierce opposition from the radical liberal elite and their middle class followers who call themselves 'The Resistance.' The Resistance gathers nightly around their communications screens and listens to one of "The Four Apostles" who deliver nightly sermons of freedom from the hated leader.
Though written in 1953 at the height of the McCarthy Era government witch hunts against Communists and people who had signed petitions against fascist in Spain, the novel has universal appeal. The work is no longer in print.
