Mayor Hangs 'Boson City Council' Painting by His Niece Mary Sue Welsh in City Hall - Outraged Liberal Democrats "This is an attack on democracy!" - 4 Oct 2019
Artist Mary Sue Welsh stands in front of her painting "Boson City Council" hanging in Boson City Hall, Boson Massachusetts. Liberal Democratic opponents claim that the Mass College of Art drop-out was only hired because her uncle is the Republican Mayor.
City Council President Ema Strickland tabled a motion in the city hall chambers demanding that the work be taken down and the $100,000 commission for the work be handed back.
"As the first openly Lesbian woman candidate for mayor I see this as a homophobic misogynous attack on all women and all gay people," said a visibly agitated Councilor Strickland. "I have alerted the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination, and filed a formal complaint. People can not get away with hate speech, and hate images in this day and age simply because Donald Trump is president."
Councilor Strickland's partner sits on the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination.
