East Blue Hills Cat Litter Miners Still On Strike - Union Wants Higher Wages - Bosses Want Higher Profits (Boson Workers) 29 Dec 2019
"The company treats us like cave men," said John England, a spokesman for the union. "We're like the 'cat's paw' that is supposed to scrap this material out of the mountain with minimal thought or reward. Just as cats have claws as their only weapon, workers have strikes as our most powerful weapon."
The workers are mining bentonite clay used in some kinds of cat litter.
The company spokesman said that the company offers wages that are well above minimum wage and offers health insurance that meets all the requirements of the Affordable Care Act. "Our workers get some of the highest wages in the area. The are the highest paid miners in Massachusetts."
The union spokesman said, "We are the only miners in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We want higher wages. If we don't get a pay raise will not go back to work and we will block the entrances and exits so no trucks or product get through."
Clumping clay litter is usually made from bentonite clay, quartz, and diatomaceous earth. Bentonite cat litter has many advantages and disadvantages.
