UMass Boson - Recycle Truck Mistakenly Removes Modern Art Sculpture Collectors Thought Was Trash

(Sunflowers for Vincent)

The impressive collection of public art recently got a little less impressive.

A bright yellow assemblage of reclaimed steel and aluminum, 30 feet long and 10 feet tall, that was erected late last year on Columbus Point at the University of Massachusetts at Boson was removed by recycling workers and thrown into their truck.

The mistake was realized several days later as the piece nicknamed 'eyesore #11' was no longer ruining the view of Boson Harbour.  Due to warmer weather people who have been under lockdown quarantine at home have been jogging or biking along harbour paths.

Most people assumed the work of art was construction debris that had been left behind and were bemused to find out that it was a commissioned sculpture.

The work has been located at the city recycle and scrap yard.  No one is sure if it has been damaged or not because it looked pretty damaged when it was brand new.

One student in student senate meeting reached by Skype responded to the removal of the 'Sunflowers for Vincent' sculpture as a work that taught him, "that no matter how bad your work is there is always some fool who will buy it from you as long as you keep a straight face and stick to your story."

Another added, "There are so many eyesore sculptures aroung UMass Boson that it doesn't make much different if this piece of junk is here, there, or anywhere.  Thank goodness we don't have to look at that junk while we take online classes."
